Currently we’re finalizing our early stage prototype in order to meet our deadline by the end of October. Nathan, our CTO, is beginning to test our navigation system with live data collected from our LiDAR. Sahil, our CEO, is working on implementing our localisation system on our embedded system. Doug has fixed up some major issues we were having with our electrical system and we now have an almost complete remote control lawnmower (video coming soon!)
The only thing left to do is for Luke Dostal to fabricate some custom parts to fit our cutting deck to the mower chassis. And the final piece of the puzzle is the exterior casing, which our CDO Luke De Bono is currently tweaking based on some modifications we have done to the mechanical system.
UON Enterprise + Innovation Week
Every August University of Newcaslte holds Enterprise + Innovation Week across each of its campuses. The week is filled with master classes, keynote speakers, mentoring sessions, and workshops; culminating with a business pitching competition. Last year Elite Robotics entered the competition on a whim… much to our surprise, we ended up winning!
It’s amazing to see the progress we’ve made these past twelve months since the competition. (Check out our blog post called ‘Year In Review’.) This year we had the opportunity to showcase our efforts to current students at our booth during the Enterprise + Innovation Expo!
Prior to E + I Week, CEO Sahil Harriram was featured in the UON Navigator:
“Sahil, who was a member of the team that won the 2016 Business Pitching Competition, said the experience completely changed the trajectory of their start-up which focussed on commercial applications for autonomous vehicle technology.”
“It gave us the validation we needed to go all out and pursue our business idea,” Sahil said. “The prize money funded the early stages of our product development, allowing us to gain traction with customers.”
The IQ talks are a quarterly event series put on by Newcastle City Council as part of the Hunter Innovation Project. The aim is to bring the community together to collaborate and develop ideas to implement into the city of Newcastle in the future.
During IQ Ignite in August, CEO Sahil Harrriram spoke to the crowd about avoiding the brain drain–pulling recent grads from regional areas to cities like Sydney and Melbourne. Sahil noted that Newcastle has everything to offer in terms of opportunities, resources and connections; without the hectic environment of living in a large city!
CEO Sahil featured in ‘The Cusp’
This month CEO Sahil was featured in the Australian online magazine, The Cusp. Tailored to millenials in their 20-30’s, the article discussed the idea of making a career change. Even twenty years ago, switching jobs/companies would be considered career suicide. Nowadays the practice is normal, if not expected. The article chronicles a handful of young professionals who’ve taken the plunge. Sahil’s story highlights both the challenges and rewards of founding a start-up.
On August 28 & 29 our team had the opportunity to travel to Dubbo to meet with Dubbo Regional Council’s Parks and Operations Team. Our purpose was to see the full scope of work their team undertakes with the intention of integrating our autonomous lawnmower into their existing workflow.
We believe that we will be able to develop a functional, time saving product that will improve the efficiency and quality of work for their greens keepers. As we further the development of our technology we are looking forward to working with Dubbo Regional Council to demonstrate the capabilities of our technology.
